Back Pain Remedies

Pain is uncomfortable, but one of the most uncomfortable types of pain is back pain. When you are experiencing back pain it can be difficult to sit, lie, or stand without experiencing discomfort. This type of pain can be caused by a variety of things, such as age, a herniated disc, or a strained muscle. Depending on the source of your pain, there are a few home remedies you can use for pain management. If you live in or around Sarasota and have back pain due to an acute or chronic condition, Dr. Kuskin at Back To Health Wellness Center is here to help.

Heat and Cold Therapy

If you have injured your back through exercise or overexertion, it is best to not use heat right away. Instead, apply a cold compress or an ice pack to help numb the area and reduce your swelling. About 48 hours after the pain begins, apply a hot-water bottle or heating pad to your back to reduce the pain. The heat will help to relax and soothe your muscle aches. It will also increase the blood flow, which helps with healing.

Complementary Therapies

Several complementary therapy options are beneficial for pain management, especially if you are experiencing lower back pain. Some of the most common complementary therapies include massage to help relax the muscles, acupuncture to release blocked energy, and spinal manipulation to correct your spinal alignment.

Take a Warm Bath

Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salt will help relieve your sore muscles, especially if you soak immediately after exercise. It is important to only use warm water not hot, which can cause your muscles to swell, and if the water is too cold it may cause your muscles to cramp. As an added benefit, soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salt will also help soften your skin and reduce itchiness.

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of back problems is to work on correcting your posture. When you have good posture, it helps keep your spine aligned, which will ultimately help reduce the risk of back pain.
