Spinal Decompression FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Spinal Decompression in SarasotaSpinal Decompression in Sarasota

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical approach to back pain, in particular, in the treatment of herniated or bulging discs from injury or degeneration. At Back to Health Wellness Center, our Sarasota chiropractor, Dr. Robert Kuskin often gets questions regarding the treatment. Here are some of the more frequent ones.

What is Spinal Decompression?

When a disc is injured, cushioning fluid is squeezed from the center of the discs. When pressure is relieved from these discs, fluid gets “vacuumed” back to the center of the disc. Spinal decompression is a treatment that takes the pressure off the spine by stretching it. This stretching results in the relief of pain and allows discs to better regenerate.

Is it an alternative to back surgery?

Yes, in most cases it is. Surgeons and medical doctors, however, are mostly unfamiliar with the procedure and may recommend surgery. Back surgery is a serious procedure and should be considered very carefully.

Will my insurance cover it?

Most major medical health insurance policies will cover forms of chiropractic treatment including spinal decompression. We invite you to bring your policy in with you and we can verify your coverage. If spinal decompression is necessary due to a work related injury or an auto accident, there may be other coverage available.

How many treatments can I expect before feeling relief?

Every patient and injury is different, making this a difficult question to answer. Some patients begin seeing results after just a few treatments. Other have taken dozens of treatments. Keep in mind, the goal of spinal decompression is long-lasting relief. We encourage patience.

Is spinal decompression safe?

Yes. While any medical procedure has risks, spinal decompression has been proven to be a very safe, non-invasive procedure when provided by a licensed chiropractor in Sarasota.
