Physical Therapy FAQs

What does a physical therapist do?

A physical therapist is a licensed and board-certified clinician who is an expert in physical function and human movement. In addition to using "hands on" techniques such as joint mobilizations, modalities (like ultrasound and electrical stimulation), and massage, physical therapists stress the importance of active participation from the patient to promote healing and injury recovery. Active participation or active therapy include therapeutic exercise and stretches that promote improved strength, endurance, range of motion, and healing of important tissues.

How are physical therapy and chiropractic care different?

Both physical therapy and chiropractic care tend to take a "whole person" approach to when it comes to healing and wellness. In some states, physical therapists are even legally permitted to perform certain spinal manipulations that chiropractors typically perform.

In general, however, a doctor of chiropractic tends to focus more on the nervous system's interaction with the body, and using manual techniques to maximize this brain/body connection. A physical therapist (who may have a master's degree or doctoral degree) tends to focus more on the active participant of the patient (through therapeutic exercise) to promote healing.

Does physical therapy hurt?

The phrase "no pain, no gain" does not necessarily apply to injury rehab. Yes, you may have some pain while recovering from an acute or chronic injury, and yes, some of the things your physical therapist asks you to do during a typical session may cause some discomfort and/or be physically challenging. As a rule however, one of a physical therapist's main goals is to provide pain relief. A properly designed and implemented physical therapy plan of care can help you feel and move better
